15,000 Maybankers to set another record in Global CR Day

Maybank is set to create another record with the participation of more than 15,000 of its employees across its international network in this year’s Global Corporate Responsibility (CR) Day this Saturday, 1 October 2011. The event is believed to be the biggest CR initiative ever by a Malaysian company globally and simultaneously in a day. Apart from Maybank employees in Malaysia, participation from the Group’s offices abroad include New York, London, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, China, Bahrain and Singapore.

The Global CR Day event was mooted by Maybank in 2010 as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. This year, the programme will again see the Board and Exco of Maybank led by its Chairman, Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor, President & CEO, Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar as well as senior executives and staff across all levels unite for a variety of causes which will focus on education, environment & conservation, medical and community.

In announcing this today, Dato' Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, said “Judging from last year’s successin which 10,000 employees were involved, we are delighted to continue this program again this year with even bigger participation from Maybankers around the globe. It is truly gratifying to see the Group employees taking the initiative to spread the ethos of sustainability in volunteerism and environmental protection. It is a strong call to action in living up to our mission to humanise financial services and reaffirms our commitment to contribute positively to communities where we operate.”

Dato' Sri Abdul Wahid said this year’s Global CR Day will see over 150 different initiatives. Some will visit orphanages and refugee centers as well as welfare and old folk homes, bringing cheer to the needy and the underprivileged. Other groups will be involved in planting trees, holding blood donation drive, landscaping and refurbishing animal enclosures at Zoo Negara or visiting the sick at hospitals.

Yet other employees will engage with underprivileged children through a series of fun-filled activities such as magic show, colouring contest and story-telling activity. There is also a special appearance by Zainal Abidin at Zoo Negara.

Other environmental projects include cleaning up of beaches, lakes and various recycling projects.

"In preparation for this, some Maybankers have even contributed their own funds as well as organised various fund raising activities for their respective projects. We have always encouraged our staff to champion different sustainability causes and supported them. Our resounding efforts in giving back to the community and the environment we operate in are vital to our success in creating a positive and sustainable impact as a business,” concluded Dato’ Sri Wahid.

Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor will accompany special children on an educational programme to the planetarium and science centre while Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid bin Omar will be planting trees at Taman Eko-Rimba KL, Bukit Nanas and volunteering at Zoo Negara.

Internationally, the Group's operations are making their presence felt in whatever way they can. Maybank London employees will be creating awareness amongst youth by giving a talk on ethical banking practices at the Malaysian Student Department while Maybank Philippines will be organizing a flu vaccination drive for Grades 3 and 4 students at Bagong Silang Elementary School. Maybank New York will collect, sort and deliver food donated by the staff and the Bank for City Harvest, the world's first food rescue organization dedicated to feeding the city's hungry men, women, and children.

In Vietnam, Maybank employees will contribute to build a house for the handicapped and homeless children studying at the Long Thanh Vocational School. Maybank Cambodia will lead a community development program in a house-building project but also provide monetary support to fund these houses while Maybank Singapore will participate in a massive collection of recyclable materials from all staff, called Project ICE (I Care for Earth).
