The Greening Malaysia Programme by Yayasan Hijau Malaysia

An initiative by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (formerly known as Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources), the Greening Malaysia Programme under the 12th Malaysia Plan was officially launched on 5 January 2021 with the theme “Greening Malaysia: Our Trees, Our Life” with the goal of planting 100 million trees from 2021 to 2025.

Planting 100 million trees over 5 years could result in a carbon offset of about 11 billion kilograms* (11 million metric tons) of CO2.

*with assumption that the planted trees continue to absorb carbon at an average rate of 22 kilograms per year and reach maturity.

The Katingan Mentaya Project, Indonesia

Protecting one of the largest remaining areas of intact peat swamp forest in Southeast Asia, the Katingan Peatland Restoration and Conservation Project covers almost 150,000 hectares of peatland in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Peatlands play a significant ecological role by reducing flood risk, absorbing large quantities of carbon, and supporting flora and fauna such as the Bornean Orangutans and Proboscis Monkeys.

Lakemere Native Regeneration Project, Australia

This project is located West of Bourke in NSW in the Mulga Lands bioregion. The land consists of red soil with stony ridges and low-lying country. The objective of this project is to regenerate natural woodlands and shrublands.  This is achieved by controlled grazing and feral animal management across the project area along with fencing upgrades. In addition to sequestering carbon, regeneration of native vegetation in the project area reverses land degradation caused by feral goats and livestock and stabilises soils reducing erosion.
