ATM Fraud

Beware of scammers persuading you to transact via ATM machines.

What is ATM Fraud?

  • Caller ID spoofing involves customers receiving phone call from alleged PDRM/SPRM/BNM/Customs/Court and coaxed into performing transfers at the ATM to an unknown 3rd party account. Customers are usually made to believe that legal action will be taken against them if they do not follow the instructions given.
  • Alleged fraudsters may also send SMS to customers informing them that they have won some prizes in a competition. Customers are then duped into transferring money to an account in order for them to claim the said prizes. Fraudsters will then immediately siphon the transferred funds from the  fraudulent beneficiary account or 'mule account' via immediate cash withdrawal or 3rd party transfer.

What would you do if you received a scam call or SMS?

  • DO NOT reveal your details such as; IC, PIN No, Account details etc
  • DO NOT follow any instruction from the caller
  • BE VIGILANT of any calls requesting you to transfer any funds to unknown account
  • REMEMBER! Banks will not call you to reveal your details over the phone

Beware of LOVE Scam!

Are you currently using social media or dating apps to meet new people? If yes, then please read on. If that person you’ve just met online is asking for financial help, BEWARE! They might just be a LOVE Scammer.

Find out on how to spot a LOVE Scam situation:

  • Scammers will create fake online profiles and post in legitimate dating sites
  • Scammers will coax the victims to gain their trust quickly and profess their love
  • They fabricate sob stories to convince victims to transfer monies to them
  • Sadly, the amount will never be enough and the victims will be asked to give more
  • They will always give excuses for not meeting in person or even refused to go on a video chat

REMEMBER! Scammers are not romantic. Don’t let them break your heart or your bank account. Protect yourself from a love scam by:

  • Being very vigilant and careful about what you post in public. Scammers can use details shared on your social media accounts to better understand their targets.
  • Always be curious and ask questions. Take your time to get to know your new found friend or love interest. Look for inconsistencies in their stories they tell you. Don’t allow a scammer to rush you into a relationship.
  • Getting a second opinion by talking about it with your family or friend. A second pair of eyes can help you spot scammers a lot easier.
  • Being aware of any money requests. Never send money over or give your banking details to an online love interest.

Always BE ALERT and BE EXTRA SUSPICIOUS when something is too good to be true. Check sources with the proper authorities, and do not rush to transfer money without proper verifications! Stay vigilant and protect your bank account by registering to Maybank SMS Alert to receive notifications!

Be Alert of Macau Scam!

If you receive a call from someone who claims to be a law enforcement agency officer and informs that you have committed a criminal act, you may be in the early stages of a Macau Scam.

MACAU Scam modus operandi:

  • The scammer will call and pretend to be an officer from a bank or enforcement agencies
  • The scammer will claim that the victim is currently under an ongoing investigation for a crime/have committed a criminal act e.g. unpaid summons or taxes
  • The scammer will warn the victim that the process is confidential and that the victim is not allowed to tell anyone about the call
  • The scammer will ask for personal information and requests for payment/money transfer into unverified bank accounts
  • The scammer will urge the victim to transfer the fund quickly so that the victim will have no time to think

If you or someone you know have been or are in the above situation, DO NOT PANIC. Below are some dos and don’ts for your guidance:

Do

  • Slow down and take steps to verify caller ID and information i.e. validate with the authorities
  • Hang up immediately if you are asked to send/transfer money or reveal your personal details
  • Consider a call blocking app to filter unwanted calls
  • Share with your family and friends as scams only work on people who don’t know about them

Do Not

  • Feel pressured to make a decision over the phone
  • Blindly follow instructions
  • Transfer funds to an unverified account
  • Disclose your personal/banking details to a third party

Always BE ALERT and BE EXTRA SUSPICIOUS when something is too good to be true. Check sources with the proper authorities, and do not rush to transfer money without proper verifications! Stay vigilant by registering to the Maybank SMS Alert!
