How to Stay Safe When Scanning QR codes

Apart from email and SMS scams, QRishing or Quick Response (QR) Code Scam, is a type of phishing that tricks users with QR codes. Scammers create fake QR codes that appear genuine, but when scanned, they redirect customers to:

  • a fake website
  • a different person’s/merchant’s account
  • download malware

It's everyone's responsibility to protect our personal information and maintain the integrity of the banking system. Be more alert to check the authenticity of QR codes and links to protect yourself from scams.

How to protect yourself from QRishing scams

  1. Before scanning a QR code, carefully inspect the items, such as newspapers, posters, magazines, pamphlets, and other materials, for any signs of tampering, such as stickers covering the original QR code.
  2. When you scan a QR code for payment, ensure the correct/genuine merchant’s name is displayed before proceeding.
  3. Ensure the authenticity of the website by checking the complete link URL (web page address) when the QR code launches your web browser.
  4. DO NOT enter your personal information or account details after scanning a QR code if it redirects you to a fake or different website.
  5. If you're asked to install a mobile app after scanning a QR code, ensure the links, publisher and requested permissions are genuine before proceeding.
  6. Install security application on your mobile device, such as anti-virus, anti-malware or any other security application that checks the websites you visit for malicious content.
